Room: TI_Reception

VanceS joined the room.

DennisOl joined the room.

DennisOl: Hey, Vance.

VanceS: hey dennis

VanceS: I was looking away for a moment

DennisOl: How's by you?

VanceS: busy, tired, the usual

VanceS: and you?

DennisOl: Some things never change, eh?

DennisOl: About the same.

DennisOl: Except for one thing.

VanceS: ah

DennisOl: I'm no longer teaching.

VanceS: oh

DennisOl: Not many people know that.

VanceS: I didn\t

DennisOl: Yes, I'm still on medical leave, and I reached the point where
"protection" for my job ceased . .

DennisOl: so I had three choices:

DennisOl: 1. return to work as usual

DennisOl: 2. return to work with "accommodations"

DennisOl: 3. resign

DennisOl: I couldn't return as usual because I still need supplemental
oxygen much of the time.

DennisOl: For my particular job, there weren't really any
"accommodations"--like admin work or teaching 100% online.

VanceS: sounds like you resigned?

DennisOl: So that left only one option: resign.

DennisOl: Yep.

VanceS: gosh, and how are you carrying on now/

DennisOl: But things are OK because I get a monthly benefit check due to
medical leave. When that ends, I'll retire.

DennisOl: So I'm carrying on OK.

VanceS: i'm almost 60 and having seen my parents out recently I'm coming to
realize that status quo is never permanent

DennisOl: For sure.

DennisOl: It's a strange realization, isn't it?

VanceS: not sure what I'll do in the situation you're in

DennisOl: I mean, for much of our lives we think we're invincible and we
push, push, push to get to wherever we want to be.

DennisOl: You would manage just fine. It's just another kind of
multi-tasking, another way of looking at a situation and figuring out how to
make things work out.

VanceS: that's exactly my plan

VanceS: glad to hear it's potentially viable

DennisOl: So you will manage just fine, whatever happens.

DennisOl: Definitely!

DennisOl: I find online work especially interesting now.

DennisOl: Oddly enough, I was hired for my former job because of the
background I had in technology-assisted learning . . . .

VanceS: how are you making it support you?

DennisOl: but the way my job was structured, I didn't actually get to use it
the way I wanted it to.

DennisOl: At the moment, it's not supporting me at all.

DennisOl: And I found out last week that I could get a paying online job,
but if I did, I'd have to forfeit 50% of what I earned because of
restrictions in the medical leave.

RickRo joined the room.

RickRo: Hi guys!

DennisOl: I'm going to switch to other topics now.

DennisOl: Hey, Rick. Tudo bem?

RickRo: Esta otimo! E com voce?

DennisOl: Otimo, no. Bem, sim!

VanceS: hey rick

VanceS: long time no collaborate

RickRo: I know, I know.... Will you be at the AUC conference in January by
any chance?

RickRo: Cairo?

VanceS: when in January?

DennisOl: AUC? Wow!

VanceS: I'll be in Sudan, of all places

VanceS: from Jan 6

DennisOl: So near and yet so far, eh?

VanceS: insha'allah

RickRo: week of the 16th

DennisOl: So how long will you be in Sudan, Vance.

VanceS: it would be possible BUT

RickRo: Sudan, sounds really interesting

DennisOl: What's happening at the AUC, Rick?

VanceS: I was thinking to pop to Thailand for the TALO event

RickRo: Big conference

VanceS: http://wikieducator.org/FLNW2

RickRo: you have got to love world travellers--just pop over to Thailand....

VanceS: there will be a lot of people there I respect highly

VanceS: so I'm thinking seriously about it

DennisOl: Sounds like a wonderful opportunity, Vance.

VanceS: I didn't realize AUC, is that EgypTesol?

VanceS: Sudan is something for Hala:
http://www.homestead.com/prosites-vstevens/files/efi/papers/sudan2007/web20workshop.htm

RickRo: The conf is at http://www.aucegypt.edu/conferences/eflconf but it
isn't official tesol

RickRo: whoops, dead link that...

DennisOl: The workshop in Sudan looks really good, Vance. Will remote
participation be possible?

VanceS: you bet

DennisOl: Wonderful! I hope to take part, then!

VanceS: is that the english skills conference, rick?

DennisOl: Rick: Did you find a link to the UAC conference?

DennisOl: I looked from the UAC entry page, but couldn't find anything--only
a big conference on using nanocomposites.

VanceS: I think I gave a plenary at that one a few years back

RickRo: nods

RickRo: This'll be my first trip to Egypt

VanceS: super

VanceS: are you a diver?

RickRo: I like to snorkel; I have been thinking about certified again to
dive. I learned how then never did it....

RickRo: Of course, we have diving here in Aqaba too

VanceS: a great tour of Egypt would be train down to Luxor

VanceS: pop over to Hurghada for diving

VanceS: not far that

RickRo: How much time would I need.... Is the snorkeling any good?

VanceS: ferry to Sinai and Sharm El Sheikh

VanceS: bus or plane back to Cairo

VanceS: the water is clear and reefs teeming with life

RickRo: sounds great! How far off shore are the reefs?

VanceS: reefs line the shore

VanceS: dive boats tend to go offshore

RickRo: Will it be warm enough in January without wetsuits?

VanceS: nooo

VanceS: cold

RickRo: brrrr

VanceS: yep

VanceS: take sweaters

RickRo: waterproof ones? {:-{}

VanceS: if you're planning on snorkeling in them, perhaps

RickRo: that might work. I have a full body suit wet suit of sorts....

VanceS: you can rent there

DennisOl: Rick: I'm still trying to find info on your event at the AUC.
What's the official name of it?

RickRo: sounds very tempting.... I won't have but a few extra days this
trip, but can always return.

VanceS: for a few days, Luxor overnight by train

VanceS: what kind of talk are you giving?

VanceS: Dennis were you here last week?

RickRo: I am not sure where the site is, seems to be down. Here's the
topic--THE THIRTEENTH SKILLS CONFERENCE

RickRo: INTEGRATING SKILLS

RickRo: “LITERACIES IN CONTEXT:

RickRo: IMPLICATIONS FOR STUDENTS, TEACHERS AND EDUCATIONAL SYSTEMS”

RickRo: CALL FOR PARTICIPATION

RickRo: Tuesday 15th January – Thursday 17th January, 2008

RickRo: School of Continuing Education

RickRo: The American University in Cairo

VanceS: I'm having problems connecting to gmail at the moment

VanceS: unusual

RickRo: I'm doing something on materials development; I just did a series of
workshops in Ramallah and Israel on online tools, though.

VanceS: how did you find it there?

DennisOl: Did you by any chance meet Elaine Hoter in Israel, Rick?

BillC joined the room.

DennisOl: Hey, Bill.

BillC: hi Dennis

BillC: been a while, how are things?

VanceS: howdy

BillC: Hey Vance

DennisOl: Good enough, Bill. How's by you?

VanceS: Dennis, I was wondering how many were here last week

VanceS: Bobbi and I had a short holiday

BillC: Busy enough

BillC: Where'd you go Vance?

VanceS: hiking

RickRo: Dennis, I didn't meet Elaine, I don't think...

VanceS: in oman

DennisOl: Vance: I wasn't here last week. Carla A. had an event scheduled
for her online class, and I was involved in it.

VanceS: would anyone like to take WiZiQ for a spin?

BillC: wow, lots of things going on

DennisOl: Rick: Elaine has been a pioneer in Israel in online ed and CMC.

RickRo: what's that, Vance?

RickRo: nods

DennisOl: Sure! I love WiZiQ.

BillC: haven't played with it yet, heard alot about it tho

RickRo: What does it do?

DennisOl: Are you going to open a session now, Vance?

VanceS: they've added some features

BillC: you got a session going?

VanceS: yeah, I'll do that

VanceS: it's like DimDim or OpenMeeting

DennisOl: Rick: voice, whiteboards, text chat, much more . . . .

RickRo: does it have firewall issues?

VanceS: not that I'm aware of

RickRo: cool

BillC: btw, hi Rick, have we met before?

DennisOl: Yes, it's definitely cool.

BeyzaY joined the room.

VanceS: I'll crank up a session

VanceS: Hi Beyza

RickRo: hi bill, maybe. I'm an old webhead

BeyzaY: hİ all,

DennisOl: Vance: I have to leave for a few minutes. If you set up a WiZiQ
session, please leave a URL, OK?

BeyzaY: Ihope everyone is allright

VanceS: sure

DennisOl: Beyza! Salaam!

BillC: what's old mean? I've been in and out for a year or so

BeyzaY: merhaba

RickRo: many years, white beard {:-{}

BeyzaY: is there a wz,q session today

BeyzaY: ?

BillC: oh, no white beard yet

VanceS: I was about to set one up

VanceS: wanna play?

BeyzaY: sure

BillC: i'm go

RickRo: is it a game or a venue?

BeyzaY: if my computer allows

BillC: think the answer is yes

DennisOl: Me, too--but I'm going AFK for five minutes or so . . . . so leave
a URL, if you start a session, OK?

DennisOl leaves temporarily

BeyzaY: cya soon Dennis

BillC: looking forward to wiziqing

VanceS: while I'm starting it, it's here http://www.wiziq.com/

BeyzaY: wiziqing :)

BeyzaY: thanks Vance

MoiraH: Well, now that is rather strange - I have a grey screen with little
weird things in the top left hand corner - but I like your photo Vance ;-)

MoiraH: I thought you were going to go to the States Beyza, I must have got
things mixed up

BeyzaY: yes I applied for a scholarship

BeyzaY: but I wasnt elligible

BillC: can't seem to get the link to work

BeyzaY: I still want to go there to do an MA

MoiraH: It was probably because the session was not quite open - there now -
just closed the first window and tried again

VanceS: I can see rick beyza and moira there

VanceS: but I'm greyed

MoiraH: sorry about not getting the scholarship Beyza - hope it works next

BeyzaY: I hope so

BillC: think the java applet for tappedin is not liking me today. link no

BillC: tried the old control-click and it didn't like it either

VanceS: can't get in and text chat?

BillC: i'm logged in wiziq

VanceS:

TimE joined the room.

BillC: think it must be the java vm-- just installed it fresh. reinstalled
everything this past week

DennisOl: Hi, Tim.

BillC: hey TIm

DennisOl: I'm at WiZiQ now and will concentrate on it.

TimE: Hi, I thought I was going to hear people talking. Do I need to go
somewhere else for that?

VanceS: yea

BillC: hey Vance, are you signed in to a certain group? i'm looking at web

TimE left the room (signed off).

VanceS: have you registered with wiziq?

BillC: yup

TimE joined the room.

TimE left the room (signed off).

BeyzaY left the room (signed off).

VanceS: really strange

VanceS: i started this wiziq session

VanceS: plugged in web cam after I launched it

BillC: is everyone there?

VanceS: yes some of us were there

VanceS: I just left

VanceS: when I went back i could talk and see the session under a greyed
veneer

VanceS: but couldn't get a mouse onto the window

VanceS: to clear a dialog box

VanceS: telling me my web cam was blocked

VanceS: though I could SEE it under the veneer

VanceS: no mouse access to the screen at all

VanceS: I snapped a screenshot

VanceS: exited, and am going back now

VanceS:
http://www.wiziq.com/tutorsession/session.aspx?JuX%2bgH%2b2Gbbovg59SBOnn4F%2fShQqHR%2f%2b6a70t%2bMYU5F2nrpqG%2bgCjBDqkuFR5blPOJaTtobCdME%3d

VanceS: restarting

VanceS: tried the link above this time

VanceS: no web cam this time, not detected

VanceS: changed browsers too

BillC: you on mac?

VanceS: pc

VanceS: now rick is in the session

VanceS: my web cam is on

BillC: hurray, if only i could get there. . .

VanceS: now dennis is on camera

BillC: am i dense or can you not search members by name in Wiziq?

BillC: you don't necessarily need to answer. . . :-)

VanceS: multitasking

VanceS: and playing

ClaireB joined the room.

BillC: hey Claire

ClaireB: hi guys

BillC: how's life?

BillC: everyone's at wiziq right now

ClaireB: busy busy

ClaireB: what's the address?

BillC: yeah, i hear you on that one

VanceS:

BillC: just sent you a wiziq message, Vance

BillC: there are 25 people signed up for wiziq under the topic webheads

VanceS: we'er still here

BillC: can you send me the link via wiziq mail?

VanceS:
http://www.wiziq.com/tutorsession/session.aspx?JuX%2bgH%2b2Gbbovg59SBOnn4F%2fShQqHR%2f%2b6a70t%2bMYU5F2nrpqG%2bgCjBDqkuFR5blPOJaTtobCdME%3d

BillC: i'm Bill C

VanceS: this is the link

BillC: for some reason i can't use the link in the java client

BillC: have tried everything

VanceS: don't know what to suggest

BillC: i just sent you a wiziq mail message, can you return it with the
link?

VanceS: i can try that

BillC: oh, you probably can't because you're in a session

VanceS: hang on

BillC: all right

VanceS: done

DennisOl left the room (signed off).

ClaireB: so are we all going to oovoo?

BillC: got the message, thanks. Unfortunately, wiziq doesn't like my Flash
plugin

ClaireB: oovoo is pc only, so I can't do it

ClaireB: my computer with windows is at my office

BillC: what about it is pc only? like IE only?

RickRo: I crashed out....

ClaireB: says mac version is coming soon

VanceS: gonna try oovoo

VanceS: http://www.oovoo.com/

BillC: guess oovoo doesn't do linux-- i'll throw the option

ClaireB: bill, are you now at oovoo?

BillC: yeah, checking out the reqs for the software

BillC: they say mac is coming soon

BillC: you can't get on either, huh?

ClaireB: no i don't have a pc at home

VanceS: installing oovoo

ClaireB: i have many pcs at work, but not at home

BillC: are you running os x?

ClaireB: yes

BillC: don't they have a version of wine for os x?

ClaireB: I don't know about wine. at work, i have parallels on my mac and
can run windows programs

BillC: that could do it, I'm going to try wine and then virtualizing with
qemu if that doesn't go

ClaireB: what is wine exactly?

VanceS: grape juice?

BillC: slightly fermented . . .

BillC: no, it's sort of like an emulator

ClaireB: huh?

ClaireB: like a pc emulator, like virtual pc and parallels?

BillC: it just uses the host os to run system calls

BillC: sort of, only it isn't virtualizing or emulating per sae

ClaireB: sounds interesting

ClaireB: for the holidays, i'll bring home my pc laptop so that i can play
with more tools

BillC: it's nice and light weight

ClaireB: kewl

ClaireB: have you guys put in your proposals for worldcall?

BillC: sounds like parallels could have some potential

ClaireB: parallels works great; i use it at work

ClaireB: but you need a lot of ram

BillC: what's it take?

BillC: i'm sort of ram poor

ClaireB: i don't know the absolute requirement, but i have 2 gb of ram at
work

ClaireB: if you have too many apps in memory at the same time with
parallels, things get slow

BillC: you're doing pretty well-- i'm 1 gb at home

KristinaHR joined the room.

BillC: yeah, qemu is like that too

KristinaHR left the room.

BillC: wine is very light weight tho if you can get it to go with the
software you're trying to use

MoiraH left the room (signed off).

BillC: the oovoo client is still downloading-- connection is a bit slow
tonight

VanceS: getting oovoo going

VanceS: great we can try that

ClaireB: when did this session start? was it 2 hours ago?

VanceS: I'm in

BillC: i don't quite know-- got lost with all the north americans and
daylight savings time

VanceS: i can check, I gave it 90 min

VanceS: 25 min left

BillC: still downloading

ClaireB: yeah, according to the ti calendar, it started at 7 am eastern time

ClaireB: i fogot that the time had changed

BillC: it's 9 pm here now, what time are you?

ClaireB: almost 9 am; it's 8:56 am

BillC: cool-- 12 hrs exact

ClaireB: you're in thailand, right?

BillC: that's easy

BillC: yeah, you're in Pennsylvania, right?

ClaireB: yes, pittsburgh

BillC: you were asking about worldcall-- you involved?

ClaireB: we had been planning to attend a conference in waterloo, ontario
(near toronto) this weekend, but icy rain was predicted, so we stayed home

VanceS: in oovoo now

ClaireB: yes, for worldcall I am co-chairing the program committee

VanceS: playing aruond

BillC: yeah, icy rain doesn't sound fun

ClaireB: we would have had to drive along the erie shore, which has really
hazardous conditions sometimes

BillC: can imagine once the air comes over the great lakes

BillC: is there a theme?

BillC: for worldcall?

ClaireB: anyhow, deadline for worldcall proposals has been extgended to dec

ClaireB: yes, it is "CALL bridges the world"

ClaireB: conference site: http://www.j-let.org/~wcf/modules/tinyd0/

VanceS: oovoo is nice

BillC: will take a look brb

ClaireB: general site: http://www.worldcall.org

ClaireB: vance, is ooovooo free?

ClaireB: no mac version available, but ***some**** webheads don't care about
that

VanceS: not when we're happily chatting in oovoo

ClaireB: how mean

VanceS: what abotu this wine that lets you emulate pc

ClaireB: have not tried it

RickRo: let's not have segregation, now....

VanceS: it'ss ok

VanceS: claire adn i are such good friends

VanceS: and we got through iVisit ok

RickRo: nothing like a little predjudice among buddies... {:-{}

BillC: wine just takes os calls and retranslates them into something the
host os (like Linux) can understand

ClaireB: apparently wine is for linux, from what I am reading

BillC: it doesn't quite get everything tho

ClaireB: oh come on rick, let me tease vance if I want to

ClaireB: we've been doing it for over 25 years

BillC: thought i heard they were working on a mac version

ClaireB: the oovoo website says that they are also working on a mac version

RickRo: claire I want you to really razz him!

ClaireB: on the topic of apple, i read yesterday that apple is adding a
voice recorder to the iphone

DeromoaGst1 joined the room.

ClaireB: it's fun to razz him

BillC: virtualizing windows. . .

RickRo: we had fun with him on the white board

BillC: oovoo still downloading

RickRo: I want my iphone--for 50 bucks....

BillC: how did you get him to stick on the whiteboard? :-)

ClaireB: vance, we just want to razz you becuase you have reached such
iconic stature

RickRo: held him down with our cursors...

ClaireB: i must admit that i loooooooooove my iphone

BillC: that'll do it every time. . .

RickRo: cut you can't use it overseas....

ClaireB: that is gradually changing tho

RickRo: iconic or ironic stature?

BillC: yeah, my iphone is a nokia. . .

BillC: but i guess they have hacked iphones for sale-- seen 'em

RickRo: my phone is hardwired

ClaireB: if i go overseas, i can remove the sim card and put it in my
motorola razr and use that

RickRo: to the wall

ClaireB: my motorola razr works overseas-- at least in spain and brazil

BillC: how's the multi-press work on that, Rick?

RickRo: slowly.....

VanceS: we're really loving oovoo

VanceS: this is great

VanceS: get it now

VanceS: NOWWW

RickRo: I'll have to try it at home....

ClaireB: can't , i'm on a mac

VanceS: join us

VanceS -))

RickRo: no can download

ClaireB: no can use

VanceS: seriousy, it's quite good

VanceS: we're taking screenshots

BillC: this is like we're at the swimming hole and can't swim. . .

RickRo: some people have all the fun, those blonds on oovoo for example

ClaireB: rick, are you in jordan now?

RickRo: Yep. Just back from a trip to the West Bank and Israel

ClaireB: kewl

RickRo: I love how everything is so close in this neck of the woods,
particularly after Brasil

VanceS: i you sure it's not mac compatible

VanceS: moire thinks there is a mac download area

ClaireB: at my university, we now have an enourmouse arabic program: now 7
instructors!

ClaireB: vance, website says mac version coming

ClaireB: if there is a mac version, tell me where to get it

ClaireB: hi deromoa

VanceS: ahh coming soon

VanceS: http://www.oovoo.com//download/

RickRo: Arabic is really growing as a target language

ClaireB: yes indeed

ClaireB: we have great arabic instructors at my univeristy

DeromoaGst1: hi, just trying this out...am a neophyte on this site...what
to do??

ClaireB: the head of the program is from u of alexandria

RickRo: I'm administering a program that sends english teachers here to the
US to teach at American universities--in Arabic

ClaireB: that is cool, rick

ClaireB: dero, this is a weekly meeting of the webheads, and everyone is
welcome to join in

VanceS: ahlan

ClaireB: today the conversation is a little random

RickRo: It's a good combo: they have the methodology (hopefully) and can
apply to making the Arabic classes more communicative

ClaireB: yes, ahlan

RickRo: Ahlan wa sahlan!

DeromoaGst1: random conversation is good...I'll let you guys
continue...thank you for responding.

VanceS: you are welcome to join us

VanceS: some of us are playing on Oovo0

RickRo: some of us, sigh {:-{}

ClaireB: yeah, ****some**** of us.

ClaireB: others of us are exclusionary

DeromoaGst1: thank you...I'll take a raincheck...need to get back to my
assignments for this week. Have a great holiday.

RickRo: Have a good one!

ClaireB: great holiday to you too

VanceS: is it raining there?

ClaireB: where/

RickRo: Nothin but sun here....

VanceS: someone took a rain check

RickRo: ohhh bad, werry bad!

ClaireB: kinda rainy here in pittsburgh; we had snow a few days ago

ClaireB: it's currently 1 degree celsius

VanceS: beautiful in abu dhabi

VanceS: nice out

RickRo: Nice here too, but colder than the dhabi no doubt

VanceS: are you in the west bank?

RickRo: I was, in Ramallah

RickRo: Back at the home base in amman now

VanceS: nice

VanceS: have you been to aqaba?

DeromoaGst1 left the room (signed off).

VanceS: great snorkeling there

ClaireB: i would loooooove to go to jordan

RickRo: I was snorkeling there over Thanksgiving

RickRo: talk about fish and coral--right off shore too

VanceS: good place to learn diving too

VanceS: easy, shore diving

VanceS: any depth

RickRo: I hear it's much cheaper that in Egypt

DeromoaGst2 joined the room.

VanceS: how long will you be there?

RickRo: I saw the coolest lion fish (are they venomous?) I have two years,
maybe 3

VanceS: lion fish are quite venemous

ClaireB: i never heard of a lion fish

VanceS: they have some stunning stonefish there as well

RickRo: Good thing I kept my distance. I knew stone fish are bad news too

RickRo: to step on anyway....

ClaireB: ah, just looked up lionfish on wikipedia

VanceS: pretty

MoiraH joined the room.

VanceS: hi moira

ClaireB: wb moira

RickRo: he was just hanging in one place, right above some coral of the same
color

MoiraH: Back again - excellent tool - I think I'll pass this striaght on to
my son and his friends :-)

MoiraH: straight

RickRo: some people have all the fun....

ClaireB: Lionfish have venomous spines that are deadly to their prey, but
not to humans. If a spine punctures you, you will experience severe pain and
possible headaches and vomiting.

ClaireB: (the above from wikipedia)

RickRo: sound like venom to me!

VanceS: i've never known anyone to be bothered by them

MoiraH: yes - it was really fun RIck. Let's hope they get the Mac version
going quickly 'cos it's really cool

VanceS: and we see them al thetime

VanceS: they are very common on reefs

RickRo: how about large fish? biggest I saw was a 3 footer

ClaireB: moira, i hope so too because i am feeling excluded (not that vance
cares.....)

MoiraH: So after all that excitement, I'm going to love you and leave you
all and get back to my boring marking ...

VanceS: poor claire

ClaireB: we will miss you, moira

RickRo: see you moira!

MoiraH: lol - I'm sure he does - it's much more playing in a big group ;-)

VanceS: I'm going to disappear too
